Are you thinking about attending Eastern this fall? Do you like free books? If so, then you should check out the Florence and Earle Stewart Book Scholarship. This scholarship does require filling out an application and writing—gasp—a mini-essay, but if you put in the work then there is a good chance that you will be awarded the money. The great thing about this scholarship is that it is specifically for non-academic books, so when you’re drowning in a sea of fifty-pound textbooks this is the perfect opportunity to find some dry land with a nice, easy, non-academic reading.
Here’s the skinny: if you are awarded the money then you have a whopping five hundred bucks to spend on the books of your choice or on tickets to the cultural event of your choice. The only catch? You can’t order five-hundred $1 books. The scholarship award can be used to purchase a maximum of two books. But this catch has a catch. Box-sets are considered a single selection, which means that if what your heart desires is the seven-volume box-set of Harry Potter hardbacks, then this is the scholarship for you. Applications and complete instructions can be found online. You can apply for the scholarship quarterly, so this is a great opportunity to grow your book collection and expand your reading.
