The Spokane County Library District is offering a new digital resource from HeinOnline: Slavery in America and the World: History, Culture & Law. Slavery in America and the World brings together legal materials and other documents on slavery in the United States and the English-speaking world.

Whether you are a scholar, student, history-buff, or simply seeking to gain more knowledge, you will find this new digital resource chronicling the history, culture and laws on slavery invaluable.

The following are included in the online collection:

  • Every statute passed by every colony and state on slavery
  • Every federal statute dealing with slavery
  • All reported state and federal cases on slavery
  • Hundreds of pamphlets and books written about slavery—defending it, attacking it, or simply analyzing it—including the pre-Civil War slavery materials collection from Buffalo & Erie County Public Library System
  • Every English-language legal commentary on slavery published before 1920, including essays and articles in obscure, hard-to-find journals in the United States and elsewhere

You can access HeinOnline’s Slavery in America and the World: History, Culture & Law from our Digital Library, 24-7, with internet access.

HeinOnline has provided this expansive collection for free to libraries and their members and plans to continue to grow this collection with new scholarship and newly discovered historical material.
