Time for a Change

It seems like lots of the new books in Teen fiction in the last year are dark, futuristic and dystopian. While I love Hunger Games, and you can’t go wrong with Divergent, sometimes I enjoy a little change of pace. Or should I say, time? Lately I’ve been enjoying time-travel books, and there are 3 series I’ve enjoyed with new titles recently out, or coming out this fall.

The Hourglass series by Myra McEntire has been gaining in popularity, and it doesn’t surprise me at all. When we first meet Emerson she is seeing visions of dead people. When her brother introduces her to a consultant from a secretive organization called “The Hourglass” she thinks he’s trying to help her find a cure. What she finds is something completely different. The second book, Timepiece, has been out for a while and series’ fans are glad the wait is finally over for the third, Infinityglass, which just came out this August.

Ruby Red is the first in Kerstin Gier’s trilogy about Gwyneth Shepherd. Gwyneth’s family has been preparing her cousin Charlotte for time travel since she was a baby. So everyone is shocked when it is Gwyneth who has inherited the time-traveling gene. Sapphire Blue was the second in the trilogy and the third, Emerald Green, came out in October.

Tamara Ireland Stone has a newer series that I recently picked up. The first book, Time Between Us, is told from the viewpoint of Anna, a typical high school girl that enjoys her life but longs for adventures outside her small town. Bennett, however, is not your typical high school boy. In fact, he’s from the future and has no plans to stay in 1995 until he meets Anna. This was a fun, fast read and I got the chance to read an advanced copy of the next in the series, Time After Time, which was released October 8, 2013. The second book is told from Bennett’s viewpoint, and I actually liked it even more.

So if you’re ready to head to a different time period (not the depressing future) hopefully one of these series will give you the change of time and place you’re looking for.
