What is wireless?
Wireless Internet access (WiFi) uses radio frequency
signals to exchange information between your computer
and the Internet. WiFi is available at all Spokane
County Library District branches.
Why wireless?
Library users can use their wireless laptop computers
to get Internet access at any table or chair in
the library and are not limited to the normal
computer areas of the library.
How do I use wireless at the library?
- The SCLD libraries use the WiFi standard
(also known as IEEE 802.11b or 802.11g).
- You will need to bring your own laptop
computer to the library and it will need to have
built-in WiFi or you will need to install a WiFi
network card.
- The network name is the same in all branches: SCLD_PUBLIC
- Most WiFi equipment will be compatible. However,
the library district can make no guarantees
as to compatibility of your equipment with the
library’s network.
- Printers are not part of the Wireless
Internet Access program in the libraries. If you
need to print, please save the work to disk, then
login to a workstation and send prints jobs to
a printer. The first 10 pages of printing from
a library computer is free.
Will I need any special settings or passwords
to connect?
No encryption settings, user names or passwords
are required.
Will I have filtered or unfiltered access
to the Internet?
Unfiltered. Wireless access is provided on a separate
network from library-owned computers and filtered
Web access is not provided by SCLD for this network.
Can the library help me configure my computer?
- No. Everyone’s computer is different
and you are responsible for knowing how to configure
your own equipment.
- The SCLD cannot be responsible for any
changes you make to your computer’s settings
or problems which develop while using the wireless
network such as virus infections. Keep in mind
that the information you send and receive over
the wireless network is visible to other users.
- If you need additional assistance, you
may need to contact the manufacturers of your
hardware or software.
Your feedback is important to us.
Please give your feedback about your experience
with the wireless system to library staff.
