Winter Is Coming

It always takes some time for me to start enjoying winter. The other seasons? I’m right there- bring on the spring flowers, heat of summer and crisp fall air. Winter takes a little longer.

Eventually I come around to the cold and snow because cold and snow mean it’s easier to make time for my favorite activity – curling up with a blanket and a good book.

I especially love reading about winter adventures during the coldest season. Maybe it helps me appreciate my warm house, cozy sweater and cup of hot chocolate even more. Here are some of my favorite winter reads:

Trapped by Michael Northrup
At first, spending the night at the high school seems kind of cool for Scotty and his friends. The blizzard that keeps them and some other students from going home should stop soon…right?

Dash & Lily’s Book of Dares by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan
Told in the alternating voices of Dash and Lily, two sixteen-year-olds carry on a wintry scavenger hunt at Christmas-time in New York, neither knowing quite what–or who–they will find.

The White Darkness by Geraldine McCaughrean
Taken to Antarctica by the man she thinks of as her uncle for what she believes to be a vacation, Symone discovers that he is dangerously obsessed with seeking Symme’s Hole, an opening that supposedly leads into the center of a hollow Earth.

Brian’s Winter by Gary Paulsen (companion book to Hatchet)
Instead of being rescued from a plane crash, what would have happened to Brian had he been forced to survive a winter in the wilderness with only his survival pack and hatchet?

Let it Snow: Three Holiday Romances by John Green, Maureen Johnson, and Lauren Myracle
In three intertwining short stories, several high school couples experience the trials and tribulations along with the joys of romance during a Christmas Eve snowstorm in a small town.
