ABOUT THE RESIDENT ARTISTS

Ava Barany & Sarah Edwards

We came together through our mutual love of plants and began making art as The Botanical Alchemists for the simple joy of creation. We have made dozens of floral installations in Spokane using repurposed flowers and elements from the natural world that embody our intention to transform the energy of a space using nature.

We have built our partnership, The Botanical Alchemists, on the foundation of creating works of art in public areas using gathered natural items and recycled flowers to make Spokane more beautiful, surprising, and engaging.

We believe this art form has the power to help people develop a deeper connection with Earth, with themselves, and with their community. This art medium has been a powerful tool of transformation in our own lives as well as those we have been able to reach thus far.

Nature art is also a form of art therapy, helping people process emotions like grief, joy, anger, and stress. We wish to offer this incredible tool to as many people in our community as possible, breaking down barriers such as perceived artistic abilities, income, age, location, nationality, or gender.

Making art out of found objects in nature is such a simple act, yet it is so powerful. Any time of year, you can find botanical items: sticks, pinecones, moss, leaves, stones, seed pods, feathers, and even snow. We encourage you to walk around your neighborhood and take a closer look at the life springing forth all around you. You may just discover a whole new world, a world that changes with the coming of each new season.
