Online programs for adults offer variety: Music, trivia & health, with a side of salsa!

Posted on July 9, 2020 at 6:00 am

We have programs that offer entertainment such as trivia for fans of Gilmore Girls and Harry Potter and music from local favorite Plaid Cat and the musical duo Brett and Janet Dodd. And if you’re craving something sweet, you can learn a recipe for watermelon salsa.

If health is on your mind, we are offering a workshop all about Medicare and the different options. You may also want to register for the discussion about depression and anxiety, which will also include some resources and is presented in English and Spanish.

You can join a new Learning Circle to study and discuss the Coursera course “Race and Cultural Diversity in American Life and History” with fellow learners. (Look for a Learning Circle about the U.S. Constitution, coming this fall. If civics and U.S. history are your thing, you won’t want to miss it!)

All programs are online and most require registration in order to get login information. Our music concerts will premiere live on our Spokane County Library District Facebook page.

Learning Circle: Race & Cultural Diversity in American Life & History

Recent events have made many of us interested in deepening our understanding of race in America. If that sounds like you, consider joining our Learning Circle for a chance to meet with other learners and discuss what you are discovering.

Learning Circles are study groups for people who want to take a free online class and learn together.

For this Learning Circle, you would need to enroll in the free course “Race and Cultural Diversity in American Life and History” on Coursera, offered by University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. You can sign up at www.coursera.org.

Once enrolled, you watch course videos and do course readings at home at your own pace. Next you meet in an online group discussion with other learners every other week for five meetings to discuss what you’ve learned and any questions that have arisen. A librarian facilitates the discussion as a fellow learner.

Race and Cultural Diversity in American Life and History” on Coursera was originally recorded in 2017 and covers different concepts of race in the America, the historic legacies of race for African Americans, Native Americans, and Asian Americans, the lived realities of race and ethnic diversity in American today, and the role of race and ethnicity in contemporary American institutions.

The course is taught by Professor James D. Anderson, PhD, who has had over 50 years of experience teaching education, history, African American studies and law. Dr. Anderson has served as an expert witness in a series of federal desegregation and affirmative action cases and has contributed to several PBS documentaries on the history of the education of African Americans.

We invite you to join us as together we deepen our understanding of a topic of importance to our time.

Registration is required. Participants need to provide an email address to receive login information.
