If you’ve read some of my previous blogs, it won’t be news when I admit that I enjoy shopping. A lot. In my 20s, I even had a personalized license plate on my car (LV2SHOP) declaring my love of all things retail. So it’s probably no surprise that we’re heading in to my favorite time of year: holiday shopping!
My younger self was pretty hardcore when it came to shopping during Thanksgiving weekend.
I’d pour over every single sales flyer and make a list of the stores I wanted to visit and the items to buy. I would even made a meticulous timeline of the order of each store visit based on the most desirable items for sale. More than once I found myself in the parking lot of a big box store before 4am on Black Friday (this was before Black Friday sales started on Thursday).
As I got older, I realized Black Friday sales weren’t much fun anymore—the cold, dark mornings, the crush of the crowds, the grind that wasn’t an adventure anymore.
Around this same time, I realized patronizing locally owned businesses could be a much more rewarding experience because local shops often carry things you don’t see in the box stores.
For example, one of my favorite local businesses was Halpin’s Pharmacy & Treasure Room in Spokane Valley. Although they’ve been closed for a half-dozen years, I can still remember the unique gifts, décor, and other items they had for sale. I could find something for even the hardest-to-shop-for people on my list!
I also feel that local shopkeepers and businesses appreciate my business. You can really get to know people who work in a local shop, and if you’re a regular customer, they remember your name and your preferences, too.
Plus my dollars are staying in the community, instead of going to wherever the big box store headquarters resides.
So these days, I’m excited about my new favorite shopping event of the year: Small Business Saturday, on November 30.
And for the fourth year in a row, Spokane County Library District is the Neighborhood Champion for Small Business Saturday in four communities.
We’re working with local businesses in Millwood (Argonne Library), as well as in Cheney, Deer Park, and Medical Lake to help community members discover fantastic local stores in each community.
To take part in Small Business Saturday activities, visit the welcome station at the library and pick up our bingo challenge activity sheet on November 30.
Complete the bingo challenge as you shop at participating local stores, and then return your completed bingo card back to the library’s welcome station to receive a gift card from a local store (while supplies last). Prizes have been provided by the Friends of the Libraries and American Express.
With 43 local businesses participating throughout our four communities, you’ll have the chance to discover some new favorite shops!
Many of the businesses will be offering specials in celebration of Small Business Saturday, so be sure to check with each business to learn more. And with at least one participating coffee shop or restaurant in each community, you’ll be able to take a break and refuel while you plan your next shopping move.
If you haven’t had the chance to visit the Cheney, Deer Park, Medical Lake, or Millwood communities before, Small Business Saturday is the perfect time to plan a road trip.
Walking through each town to check out the shops is a great way to explore and appreciate the sights and what each town has to offer.
If you see me shopping, be sure to stop and say hello. I’ll show you the awesome finds I’ve discovered and let you know where to find some amazing holiday gifts.
Note: The Shop Small Welcome Station for Millwood (Argonne Library) will be at The Rocket Bakery.
Many participating businesses are offering specials in celebration of Small Business Saturday. Please check with the businesses to learn more.
All listed hours are only for Small Business Saturday on November 30, 2019, and may not reflect usual business hours.
