ARTIST IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM

We’re hosting four local artists in residence at The Lab at North Spokane Library this fall. Each month, the artist in residence provides hands-on learning opportunities for community participation and also creates art in The Lab.

Everyone is encouraged to stop by to see the displays of artist’s artwork changing each month and meet each artist. You can have a conversation about the artist’s process, the artwork currently under creation, and art in general while the artist works.

TOM QUINN: DECEMBER ARTIST IN RESIDENCE

Originally from Great Falls, Montana, Tom Quinn grew up surrounded by art. Later, he attended Gonzaga University and spent his junior year in Florence, Italy. Now living in Spokane, Quinn has created several murals and hundreds of easel paintings, illustrated four books, and teaches art at the Corbin Art Center.

Tom’s work has been exhibited in galleries in Spokane, Seattle, and Portland. He works mostly in acrylic and oil, with hard edges and intense colors. He likes to show what’s absurd but not impossible, to take the ordinary out of context, and to turn the familiar into the strange.

FREE ART CLASSES WITH TOM

Basic Color Theory

We discuss just how color works in painting and the best ways to apply it with a hands-on activity. Starting with the basic color wheel to create a color scheme, we’ll explore the ways artists use the components of color—hue, value, intensity, and temperature—to create a pleasing color composition. Registration required.
