Notary Public Services

SCLD offers free, limited notary public services by appointment.

Please allow 3–5 business days for a response to requests for notarial services, though you may hear back from us sooner.

What to Bring

To have a successful appointment, you must bring the following to your appointment:

  • All documents that require notarization. Do not sign the document(s) you are having notarized ahead of your appointment. Documents must be signed in front of the notary.
  • Witnesses, if needed, must accompany you to the appointment and have picture identification. You may not solicit library employees or customers as witnesses.
  • Valid form of photo identification for each person signing the documents. These include:
    • Current Driver’s License
    • State-Issued Identification Card
    • U.S. Passport
    • U.S. Military ID
    • U.S. Permanent Resident Card
    • If under 18 years of age, a certified copy of birth certificate and current school ID with photo.

Library Notary Restrictions

  • The library notary public cannot notarize or complete a Form I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification, loan documents, copies of documents, and documents that are not in English.
  • The library notary public cannot prepare a legal document.
  • The library notary public cannot give advice on legal matters.
  • The library notary public cannot act as a witness.
  • Witnesses may not be solicited from the customers in the library.
  • The library notary public cannot certify true copies of birth certificates, death certificates, marriage certificates, divorce certificates, passports, driver’s licenses, or other similar documents. NOTE: Only the issuing agency can certify true copies.

Disclaimers

  • The library notary can only offer basic notarization services. Complex requests may be referred to a different provider.
  • The library notary reserves the right to decline service in cases that raise concerns about authenticity, ambiguity, and/or doubt.
  • The notary and the individual whose documents are being notarized must be able to communicate directly with each other.
  • All applicable Washington state laws apply to notary public services offered at SCLD.
