You’ll find a variety of events and workshops for adults at the library in November. You can start a new hobby, dive deeper into your favorite creative activities, and even find holiday inspiration. Watch authors discuss their projects, books, and the topics they are passionate about.

Our sessions covering helpful topics include ways for older adults to prevent falls, ideas for supporting loved ones with memory loss this holiday season, and looking at your Medicare needs and changes during this open enrollment period.

Looking for holiday inspiration? Discover how to use the Glowforge laser cutter and engraver to make your style come to life, during Glowforge: Holiday Ornaments for adults and teens age 16 and older. Make digital memories more accessible for family and friends this holiday season during Project Memory: Digitizing Home Movies. The return of Awkward Family Photos: Holiday Cringe Edition for all ages promises chuckles and guffaws for those who dare to embrace a wince-inducing and jolly time.

Authors & Books

During the presentation Lost Apples of the Palouse, hear about the thousands of named apples trees that have gone missing over hundreds of years and the steps being taking to bring these apples back to life. Dave Benscoter, co-author of Lost Apples: Supporting the Search for Rare and Heritage Apples in the Pacific Northwest, and/or Bret Clifton share the exciting finds happening right here in the Palouse.

Health, Wellness & Support

If you or someone in your life is impeded by a fear of falling and getting injured, then the class A Matter of Balance: Preventing Falls may be what you’re looking for. The eight-session series begins on October 27. Learn the strategies needed to set realistic goals for increasing activity and to identify environmental adjustments to reduce risk factors for falling.

Holidays are often difficult for people experiencing memory loss, dementia, or Alzheimer’s disease. The online program Supporting Those with Memory Loss During the Holidays offers educational tips on how to support a loved one who might have a difficult time with the busy holiday season.

Connect with other caregivers and people experiencing memory loss while also socializing and building new support networks during our Memory Café at North Spokane and Spokane Valley Libraries. Activities include music, crafts, and more.

Starting October 27, the Empowered Caregiver Workshop Series begins at Spokane Valley Library. Caregivers gain knowledge of how to navigate the responsibilities of caring for someone with dementia, while taking care of their own well-being. Topics include building foundations of caregiving, supporting independence, communicating effectively, responding to dementia-related behaviors, and exploring care and support teams.

Open enrollment for Medicare has begun for 2026, and whether you have general questions or would like one-on-one assistance, there’s a Medicare program at the library that can help you with the options.

Explore all of the major aspects of the home-buying process in an unbiased format with SNAP Spokane instructors at a Homebuyer Education Seminar. Upon completion, attendees will receive a certification, which can be used to apply for down-payment assistance.

Financial educators from BECU, share expertise in two informational sessions: Manage Your Money: A Practical Guide to Handling Your Finances and Fraud Detection & Prevention.

Learn how to plan and prepare for potential challenges, including natural disasters, extreme weather, industry regulation changes, supply chain disruptions, and other difficult situations.

Dr. Natalie Nixon PhD challenges the outdated model of productivity rooted in time, speed, and output, and discusses a new framework for productivity and her book Move. Think. Rest.: Redefining Productivity & Our Relationship with Time. This is a call to rethink productivity—not as grind, but as cultivation.

For Parents & Caregivers of Early Learners

There are thousands of picture books to choose from. Librarians Sheri and Mary Ellen discuss new ones for babies, toddlers, preschoolers, and emergent readers during Picture Book Chat. Hear about books children will enjoy and some book-inspired activities you can try with them.

Parents and caregivers for young children can bring stories to life with felt pieces. During STARS Training: Felt Stories & Early Literacy, we share how felt stories develop early literacy and early math skills. Learn how to make easy felt stories and leave with one felt story ready to use. This program is part of SCLD’s STARS Training series and offers 3 STARS credits.

Find out how you can help a child improve their reading skills and gain confidence as a reader when you attend our online Reading Buddy Volunteer Orientation for adults and teens age 16 and older.
