Bites & Books Food Drive

The annual spring food drive continues in 2026 and includes partnerships with NonStop Local KHQ, Second Harvest, Spokane Public Library, Liberty Lake Municipal Library, and Aequus Sports.

Every library in Spokane County is collecting nonperishable food for Bites and Books – Turning the Page on Hunger. This county-wide food drive is the entire month of April.

Bring canned or packaged non-perishable food to any library during April.

Donations of peanut butter and cereal are always appreciated. Your generosity does make a difference.

Donations will also be collected at the Spokane Zephyr FC Soccer match at One Spokane Stadium on Sunday, April 26.

As food donations are collected, Second Harvest distributes food to local food banks throughout the county. You can learn more about Second Harvest as well as how they help those with food insecurity at the Second Harvest website.

The USDA defines food insecurity as “limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate and safe foods, or limited or uncertain ability to acquire acceptable foods in socially acceptable ways.” Feeding America estimates that “48 million people—1 in 7—are food insecure in the US.” In Spokane County in 2024, 13% of our population and 19% of our children were food insecure.

Our experience from previous food drives has shown that residents in the greater Spokane area are generous and value their community. So, we hope that you can help us fight food insecurity again this year.

Studies have shown that hungry children struggle to learn and grow. Nearly 1 in 5 kids in Spokane County is food insecure.

SCLD has taken steps to help ease food insecurity for children in our communities by participating in a federally funded snack program.

After school and during school breaks, youth ages 1 to 18 can get a free, healthy snack at the library. This program is offered at Airway Heights, Cheney, Deer Park, North Spokane, and Spokane Valley Libraries.

Find snack days and times on our web page Free Afternoon Snack for Kids.

This snack program serves, on average, over 1,000 snacks to children each month, demonstrating its need and positive impact for youth in Spokane County.
