September programs, workshops, and events for adults provide a variety of opportunities for lifelong learning. Plus, kids can stop by the library for after-school activities, to solve a mystery, and even eat a snack.

For Adults

Creative Classes

Explore your creativity during Cookie Decorating using the watercolor technique, Long-Stitch Bookbinding trying a traditional method, Outdoor Painting Meetup: Fall Foliage, and at the Podcast Publishing session in The STCU Studio.

Gardening Programs

During the Seed Saving class, explore techniques to identify, harvest, and store seeds for the next planting season and to share with SCLD’s seed libraries.

Practice saving seeds from drought resistant flowers, including purple coneflowers, black-eyed Susans, common yarrow, sheep fescue, and more, during Seed Saving in Spokane Valley Meadow.

If you have pests in your garden or you want advice on your garden, the WSU Extension Master Gardeners Plant Clinic at Cheney Library can help. Do you have a bountiful harvest of fruit and vegetables? Bring your extras to a Produce Swap and take home something different from another garden.

Health, Wellness & Support Sessions

The next workshop series for A Matter of Balance: Preventing Falls starts in September at North Spokane Library. Learn the strategies to set realistic goals for increasing activity and to identify environmental adjustments to reduce risk factors for falling.

Our Memory Café for those experiencing memory loss and their caregivers continue at North Spokane and Spokane Valley Libraries. Get useful information during the various Dementia programs for caregivers and anyone wanting to help create a dementia-friendly community.

Two programs offer unbiased support for those looking to buy a home and for anyone looking for a new job or a career change. Nature & Survival Skills Workshops

The Lands Council leads the Tree Identification Walk: Appleway Trail, the last of the season, and shares the fundamentals of determining tree species.

We’re wrapping up two survival classes in September. Be sure to sign up for Introduction to Wilderness Survival in the Inland Northwest and Introduction to Urban Survival, both led by Charlie Bouck, 20-year U.S. Air Force Survival Instructor.

Kids, Tweens & Families

Five of our libraries offer Free Afternoon Snacks for kids ages 1–18, year-round.

Harness your detecting and critical thinking skills to look for clues, solve codes, and help crack The Case of the Missing Book (ages 8–12).

Find a LEGO Free Play drop-in session for kids ages 5 and older and their families at a library near you to explore your building and engineering skills. These after-school programs offer new activities each week with a focus on science, technology, engineering, art, or math (STEAM):

Early Learners & Their Caregivers

Young children and their caregivers can enjoy stories and activities to build early literacy skills, all while having fun, at our weekly Play & Learn Storytime programs.

Parents, caregivers, and anyone interested in early childhood literacy can watch Picture Book Chat to learn about the best new books to read with early learners. They can also sign up for STARS Training: Movement & Early Learning to discover how movement stimulates brain development in young children.
