Quilting & Sewing Arts Month

Quilting is about so much more than fabric and thread. It brings people together to share stories, learn from one another, and create something meaningful by hand.

From friendships formed around a sewing table to the satisfaction of completing a cherished project, quilting offers an outlet for creativity and opportunity for connection. That spirit of community is at the heart of Quilting & Sewing Arts Month at The Lab at North Spokane Library this September.

The library is hosting classes, demonstrations, and open hours for those interested in quilting. Participants will be able to explore traditional and modern quilting techniques, receive guidance from experienced quilters, and use a variety of tools and equipment.

Quilters of all skill levels are invited to gather, learn, and create together at the library.

This celebration of textile arts is made even more special by the loan of a Handi Quilter (HQ) Sweet 16 Longarm Quilting machine shared in memory of Sandy Calbreath by her family. As an avid reader (particularly of mystery novels), passionate quilter, and longtime library supporter, Sandy believed deeply in the joy of quilting and the friendships it fosters. She treasured the friendships formed in her quilting group and looked forward to the annual quilt retreat each year. She created beautiful quilts for her children and grandchildren that are a continuous, tangible expression of her love.

By sharing Sandy’s longarm quilting machine with the library and the community, the Calbreath family is helping to continue her legacy and give others the opportunity to experience the creativity, accomplishment, and sense of belonging that quilting can inspire.

Whether you’re picking up a needle for the first time or have years of quilting experience, Quilting & Sewing Arts Month at The Lab offers a welcoming place to learn, create, and connect.
