Online Summer Reading Challenge

JUNE 1–AUGUST 31

Dig into a summer of reading and discovery! This year’s dinosaur-themed challenge invites readers of all ages to explore new worlds, uncover hidden gems, and track their reading online with Beanstack.

This online reading challenge is for everyone—adults, families, teens, kids, and even babies. Log your reading, earn digital badges for rewards and prize drawings, and complete fun activities all summer long.

This year, the theme is Unearth a Story, and the challenge is separated into four age groups:

  • Early Learners (ages 0–4)
  • Kids (ages 5–12)
  • Teens (ages 13–17)
  • Adults (18+)

All age groups have the same reading goals, earning a digital badge for every 60 minutes of reading with completion of the challenge at 600 minutes of reading. Activities for each age group differ and also earn digital badges.

Help SCLD reach our community reading goal of 1 million minutes and unearth a story this summer!

Book Giveaway & Rewards

Every child and teen, ages 0–17, who registers for the Online Summer Reading Challenge can visit an SCLD library to choose a new book to keep forever, while supplies last.

Once reading for 240 minutes (4 hours), youth ages 5–17 can claim a coupon for one free soccer ticket with the purchase of a ticket to a Spokane Velocity FC match.

Once reading for 450 minutes (7.5 hours), youth ages 0–17 can claim one free admission to the Spokane County Interstate Fair, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary.

When completing the challenge by reading for 600 minutes (10 hours) or more, participants of all ages will be entered into the grand prize drawing for their age group and earn a Certificate of Achievement, plus serious bragging rights.

Grand Prize Drawings

The grand prize drawing for each age group features prizes specifically for each group. Prize drawings take place after the Summer Reading Challenge ends on August 31.

Early Learners (ages 0–4)

The grand prize is a package of two passes to We Play, plus grippy socks and T-shirts.

Kids (ages 5–12)

The grand prize is a gift certificate for a birthday party at Brick Buy Brick.

Teens (ages 13–17)

The grand prize is coming soon. Check back!

Adults (ages 18+)

Since adults aren’t earning rewards for reading milestones, there are five prize drawings for this age group.

As you reach each 60-minute reading milestone, you earn a virtual ticket along with your digital badge. You decide where to place your virtual tickets—all for one prize drawing or spread across more than one. The limit is one prize per person for the Summer Reading prize drawings.

The grand prizes for adults are:
